This is an immensely important book on the historiography of British Columbia. It’s groundbreaking for bringing a critical examination to bear on how history has been constructed in this province in order to exclude people (e.g., Indigenous, among others) while promoting certain others, notably Britons or people of British ancestry. However, these early historical works, for all their faults and being a product of their times, have fundamentally good history within them. Importantly, this book guides one through the major historians of BC and their notable works in order for students of BC history to tackle a wider array of historical histories and read them with a better understanding. While this book is well written, there are certain times where the same concept was presented again almost from scratch. I know the author was trying to be clear with his ideas, but it caused me serious déjà vu. A more brief recap would have done the same job and been less jarring. I want to importantly note that the author did very well to discuss the travails of being a female historian in this time period. Reading into the struggles of female historians was illuminating and gave me pause to how these scholars were treated by their male colleagues.
