Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-29 00:00:00 Mary Macleod A stellar addition to public and elementary school libraries, HOW DO WE LIVE TOGETHER? DEER is an appealingly-presented junior nonfiction book filled with large color photos of its subject matter. Unlike older materials that tend to just look at suburban wildlife as resources or pests, this book appreciates deer for the beautiful, complex animals they are and reminds readers that finding ways to coexist with wildlife will result in the best outcome for all involved. The author gives a brief, age-appropriate overview of the conflicts people most often have with deer and some of the ways these conflicts can be mitigated. Hunting is mentioned with the acknowledgement that not everyone agrees with it. Youngsters who also disagree with hunting won't feel like they're being shouted down here, and will come away with some new ideas for non-lethal conflict resolution. Recommended for libraries and classrooms, especially in suburban and rural areas. |
