Matossian makes the case that fungal food poisonings (mainly ergot, but also Fusarium toxins) have influenced history in significant ways: witchcraft accusations, mortality and fertility rates, the Great Fear of 1789, colonial New England "throat distemper", and the Great Awakening. She makes strong arguments with statistical as well as historical anecdotal data. She includes speculation also, and though I don't fault her for that, some of it is weak or even contradictory (e.g., ergot symptoms can be pleasant or unpleasant, and her speculation chooses whichever way is convenient). Don't expect entertainment; the book is written in a scholarly style. But it is concise and interesting.

This book has been very helpful with Gregory and how to help him. It has been very informative as well. It has made me decide that all of us are going to try our best to stay away from anything artificial. It will be hard, and I am sure there will be times we will slip up, but I think it will be worth it. I love that it gives recipes and an outline in the back of the book. It is a little outdated with some of the recipes and restrictions. For instance, in the book it says to basically make your ice cream at home, you won't be able to find any without artificial flavors or colors. But, I did find some at the store. So, that is nice. I love it.
