I read this book when I was eleven and I absolutely loved it. Dinah's big appetite and big voice-the one that helped her get out of scrapes- kept me entertained throughout. Pantelli was hilarious, Jack was sweet, Roderick was, to quote Dinah, a dweeb, and Buzz's anger issues had me cracking up. I loved how Madge wasn't just some vapid, stereotypical, perfect older sister. That's how it seems at the beginning, but a few more chapters and you see that's not her at all. Madge is not an airhead, she isn't shallow and she doesn't brush off her little sister's claims as crazy and blame them on her overactive imagination. Well, maybe the ones about Roderick's dweebiness. But my point is, she would be a pretty cool older sister for anyone to have. The other thing I liked about this book was that it wasn't all black-and-white. Dinah's dad didn't die because of someone else's mistake. His death was his fault. Even though he was a good father, he wasn't perfect, he made mistakes. And Dinah doesn't hide that, or gloss it over. All the characters had their flaws and that was what made this book such a good one. The flaws completed it. The tone was honest, realistic without ever getting too serious. Dinah says life doesn't fit into convenient extremes, into good or bad. Neither does this book. And that's why, after the first time I read it, I re-read it. And re-re-read it. And have read it so many times since then that my copy is now so tattered and old-looking that no one believes me when I tell them I only bought it a few years ago. I conclude with my favorite Dinah quote: "Never underrrate the pleasures of immaturity."
