What do a Rabbi, rich man, teacher, doctor, lawyer, butcher, baker and a candlestick maker have in common? Their prayers were not answered. It took the gentle whispers of prayers by a poor cobbler to bring 40 days of much needed rain and, ultimately, the end of the storms to a little village. So goes the story of "You Never Know, A Legend of the Lamed-Vavniks" as told in the book written in 1998 by 70 year old American novelist, Francine Prose and tenderly illustrated by 72 year old former physician, Mark Podwal. Ms. Prose tells the ancient Jewish legend where there are always 36 holy people in the world who are known as Lamed-vavniks (from the Hebrew for 36). These people are so righteous and just that their prayers are always answered. Yet they live in secret, disguised as ordinary people, humble and often poor. "You Never Know," gently introduces children to the less fortunate. How compelling for young readers to come to know the faceless Lamed-vavniks! Regardless of age, we are drawn to the simple acts of goodness because "you never know" who or where or when your life will be touched by a Lamend-vavnik.
