A delightful collection of Native American legends from the Wabanaki people, who live on the shores of the Great Lakes.

The short children's stories in Glooscap and His Magic remind somewhat of Grimm's fairy tales. The Wabanaki legends, as they are told here, are not nearly as ironic, odd or dark as Grimm's and they all carry an ethical and perhaps even a moral lesson. Glooscap, a mythical Wabanaki hero, is referred to as the Great Chief, Master and is said to be the maker of Little People (fairies), which came first, then men and women and finally out of the rocks and clay, Glooscap made the animals. In each of the short stories, Glooscap conducts some form of intervention. Often this occurs while in disguise so that and the moral or ethical character of his 'subject' can be determined and either rewarded or punished as appropriate. In psychoanalytical terms, Glooscap embodies the Lacanian concept of Ego-Ideal'-the agency whose gaze I try to impress with my ego image, the big Other who watches over me and propels me to give my best. On a simpler level, I can't imagine any young child not enjoying and being enchanted by these stories.
