"if my eyes will not tell me about men and events, ideas and doctrines," louis wrote in his diary, "i must find another way." 💙 this is a very short but informative children's book account of the life of louis braille. i found it at a local library sale & for some reason really wanted to buy it (as well as a bunch of other children's non-fiction books). 🤔📚 anyway, i was always aware that braille existed, but i never knew who invented it and when. louis braille, a french man born in the early 1800's accidentally blinded himself as a child in his father's harness workshop. at first he was terrified of leaving his house because he couldn't see and was afraid he would get trampled by horses while on his way to the nearby village. his father built him a cane that he could put out in front of him to notice any obstacles in his path. gradually he became more and more independent and comfortable going out. he invented braille due to the frustration of not having access to the same amount of information that sighted people had. he tried out all of the available systems to help blind people read but found that they were too complicated and by the time he reached the end of a sentence, he forgot what he was reading about and had to go back. he wanted something that was far less complicated and daunting. he fought hard to get his finished braille system to become adapted as the main way for blind people to re-learn to read 💙 my one complaint is that the braille alphabet at the end of the book wasn't raised. i kind of want to learn how to read in braille.

Inspiring, informative book for teens about the man who devised the most widely used system for printing books for the blind.
