Ancestral Portraits is a captivating accout of one man's progress through life. Not only in the art world, in which he undoubtedly plays an important, although not very prominent part. Ancestral Portraits is much more than an 'artist biography' - it's the biography of a person of Cree descent born and raised in the bush of Northern Alberta (he is nowadays based in Calgary). And here exactly lies the strength of Ancestral Portraits. McDonald lays some of his innermost thoughts and feelings open. It's honest and touching and all the better for it. In addition to dozens of his artworks it features a few of his poems as well. His paintings are very colourful and clearly show an artist with a great depth of vision, incorporating scenes from his life, family and First Nations people/stories with fantastic, dreamlike imagery infused by his Cree heritage.
