A nice introduction to the German Shepherd. We have had one German Shepherd mix (e.g., with a retriever) and one purebred dog coming from Germany. Both were wonderful in disposition. Thus, this book resonates. The book begins with a discussion of the vision of one man, Max von Stephanitz, to create a breed of dog that would exemplify a number of characteristics--a faithful friend, a working dog who could herd, gentle with family and friends, and who would be severe and swift to people who might wish to do harm. And indeed, today, German Shepherds, if of good genetic stock, are loyal, friendly, athletic, on task, and so on. Thus, the original vision has emerged pretty nicely. This book provides a general introduction to the breed--and pretty well done at that. Among subjects covered: choosing a dog, health and nutrition, training (it is critical to train this dog properly), obedience (we learned a lot from having our Shepherd go through a number of levels of training), and so on. There is a discussion of German Shepherd competition (our purebred had a grandfather who won a German competition--pretty cool!). Want to learn something about the German Shepherd? This is a nice introduction. Comment Comment | Permalink

I would give five stars if the pictures were remotely helpful. Alas, I know that's not the author's fault, but that the editor went galloping with a handful of generic GSD shots that had nothing to do with the text. When someone calls me for more information on the breed and how to raise and train one, I refer them to this book.
