I am a bit confused as to why this isn't rated better, I found this to be one of the top two dog training books I've read (Out of like 12/13). This isn't just about training your dog, its also about training yourselves and your family to train the dog. Maybe that's why some people don't like it so much, because it can take work/time. But it's worth it to raise good animals without using more aggressive methods, and I think it is definitely possible, assuming you can get everyone in your family on board, to be done relatively quickly. This typically goes with the Positive Dog Training style, and has step by step instructions to teaching your dog the one-word commands (because using multiple words in multiple ways -> lay down, down, lie down, sit down, get down, off) can all be confusing for a dog.

I read this to familiarize myself with the process of training a dog -- which I've never done, but my novel's main character has. So I can't speak for whether this book is actually useful for training Fido. But the structure of each suggested command is clearly explained, with close attention to how a dog will interpret human behaviour. This cat person found it an enlightening look into the canine mind.
