This is not a travel guide; it's one woman's experience cycling through Cuba in the cheapest and least touristy way possible. If you want to learn about what to see in Cuba, this is not the book. If you want to get a feel for the people of Cuba (albeit just through the author's eyes), this book could be interesting to you. Though I did not enjoy the author's stinginess with the locals (a trait she even berates herself for, though she doesn't stop haggling with them). According to this book, Cuba is cheap. I didn't see the point in the author trying to haggle a $15 room down to $10 when she reminds us a few times throughout the book that she has $2000 on her (a crazy amount to carry in Cuba, and completely unnecessary considering how far $1 goes). The most useful thing I got from this book is what not to do - don't go on boat rides with strangers, don't take the train, don't leave your bags unattended, don't hitchhike unless you want to stand on the side of the road for hours (I found it weird how much the author hitchhiked considering she had a bike; just ride!). I also feel properly forewarned about the lack of toilet paper, bathroom facilities and food, and will travel to Cuba more prepared than I might have otherwise.

The description of Cuba is very good, but it is extremely hard to enjoy the portrait of the author. Not until towards the very end does she address her own inability or unwillingnness to help and truly show compassion.
