Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-12 00:00:00 Ronald Phillips Jr I came across this book last week while randomly looking over the shelves in the Bacon Memorial Library in Wyandotte, Michigan for the first time in over twenty years. If I remember correctly, I hadn't set foot inside the place since I worked there as a high school student in 1987-88. Because I have lived within easy walking distance of the Detroit Public Library's Main Branch for nearly all of the last two decades, and the Bacon is tiny in comparison, I wasn't expecting to find many (or, for that matter, any) interesting books to read that I had not already seen and/or read. I am happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I used to know those stacks like the back of my hand, and I suppose I had forgotten that for its size, the Bacon has a fairly impressive collection. In any case, I was completely unaware that this book even existed. Considering that I tend to read a lot of books about the wars in Indochina, and that in this particular case the author grew up in Detroit and still lives in the area, I am quite surprised by that. There are many memoirs by LRRP/LRP/Rangers* who served in Viet Nam, and I have read the vast majority of them. This one is one of the best so far. Mr. Ankony has written a book that is the equal of those by Larry Chambers, Dennis Foley, Kregg P.J. Jorgenson, Gary A. Linderer, Reynel Martinez, and Kenn Miller- all of whose books I enjoyed very much and recommend highly. As stated above, there are many more books that have been written by and/or about LRRP/LRP/Rangers* in that war; sometimes it seems like every surviving member of the 101st Airborne's LRRP/LRP/Ranger* unit has written a memoir... I would hope that this book becomes better known as a well-written and interesting addition to the canon. Incidentally, it is always nice when I have the opportunity to read a library copy before actually spending my own money on a book; this is one I'll definitely be getting my own copy of as soon as I can. Damn, this is laborious- I can't write worth shit for some reason right now. Maybe it's because, like an idiot, I stayed up 'til 4 o'clock in the morning reading again... *LRP= Long Range Patrol LRRP= Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Ranger means essentially the same thing, but has a historical lineage in the U.S. Army. On January 1st 1969, all LRRP or LRP units were re-designated as Rangers, becoming component companies of the 75th Infantry Regiment (Ranger). |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-02-23 00:00:00 Pat McCaffrey Great book, very good insight into the life of a young Army Ranger. Obviously I'm particular to this book, he's my dad!!!! I had heard some of the stories when I was younger but so much of it I had never known about. It was a very descriptive and well told account of his life as a troubled youth and how he grew up in the military and in Vietnam. |
