If anything this is even better than Ward's 'Hare and the Tortoise.' This is better designed, because all the world's birds are organized (on some pages) by their 'talents' or particular features. I think maybe my favorite picture is the one of all the bills pointing skyward. And there's only one fish, and one mammal, if my tired eyes saw the pix accurately... see if you can spot them. I've decided that Ward found her niche illustrating the fables with real animals, and that these books might be at least as good as Ruth Heller's How to Hide a Meadow Frog and Other Amphibians, Up, Up and Away, and others. She also does a great job retelling the tales themselves, gracefully talking about the "oldest (and possibly wisest) of the birds" and about the individuals' attempts to justify themselves as King. I would buy a set of these for a classroom (and sets of each of Heller's series), ages 6-12.

The illustrations alone make this tale worth it.
