We were twenty when he was born and fifty when he died. Our hearts were broken on both days. At first, because we weren't wise enough to recognize the blessing he would be for us, so we grieved over the loss of life we had dreamed of, the man we thought he should have been. Later, after God had revealed His better plan for us and we saw the beauty and goodness of His ways over our dreams, we grieved the loss of the life we had come to love and value and cherish. Roberta had always dreamed of being a mother. Shortly after the birth of her first child, Rob, her life was forever changed when she learned about the extent of the extreme physical and mental defects that plagued her firstborn son. Disappointed and ashamed, Roberta was unsure of how to deal with a child who would never live the normal life that most take for granted. In the pages of A MOTHER'S SEARCH FOR MEANING, the author details her spiritual journey towards understanding her son's several disabilities. She decided that there was a purpose for everything, and that Rob was given to her to teach her grace, love, and compassion for others. Although Rob's mind never progressed beyond that of a very young infant, he learned to smile, dance, laugh, and enlighten those around him -- up until the moment of his last breath, 29 years later. This is a touching heartfelt story told in a very sensitive manner. The review copy I was given for review purposes did have a number of typos that made it a bit of a distracting read, so I would like to see tighter editing and perhaps a bit more help on the writing structure to help things flow. Despite the errors and quirks with the narration, this was a quick read that was definitely worth the time.

Short but beautifully written book that speaks honestly about the depth of love and untold blessings that can come from having living with a child with a major disability. If anyone has ever wondered about the meaning of life or if a life that is less than "perfect" can have meaning, this is a book that will open your eyes to what life really should be about. Roberta Brandy related the story of her first child, Rob, born with profound birth defects and ultimately unable to speak, yet how his life and death made a profound impact on the world around him and how the love and blessings that resulted from him made up a thousand time over for the limits of his multiple disabilities. I will not soon forget this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone as a very inspirational and meaningful read!
