----- مما اقتبسته: "Learning good methodology involves more than going to a traditional research methods textbook: students should, at the same time, be learning to understand what their field is and to understand the state of play in it, to demonstrate some self-consciousness about how that community will judge the new work and evaluate what is being added." "The literature review, for example, is not merely there to show that the writer has done some background reading, but to set up what type of a thesis this is; to show which discussion he or she is aiming to make a contribution to." "As the University of London Institute of Education advice to students puts it, 'Ideally, the problem to be tackled in the research should emerge naturally and inexorably from the literature review.' But to 'emerge naturally and inexorably' actually requires considerable work of discrimination and constructive writing on the part of the student." "The 'normal' PhD is expected to challenge. One common way to make progress on a problem (now vaunted in the sciences as well as the social sciences) is to bring together theories and perspectives about an area that have formerly been kept separate; or to contribute to a current research body in a field by seeking a different type of theory and research approach to bring to it." "The imperative for theses in this mode is to produce something that shows you have mastery of the norms at the same time as breaking through and doing something different." "The thesis is being judged on its ability to acknowledge the existing field adequately as well as on its ability to add something new. It is being judged in terms of whether this newcomer deserves to be seen as a peer."
