"The imperative for theses in this mode is to produce something that shows you have mastery of the norms at the same time as breaking through and doing something different." "The thesis is being judged on its ability to acknowledge the existing field adequately as well as on its ability to add something new. It is being judged in terms of whether this newcomer deserves to be seen as a peer."
