For years DK has been producing fantastic book after fantastic book in the "Eyewitness" series, and Viking is no different. At a full 72 pages, the volume covers everything from ship building to meal time to burials. Warriors and weapons are given equal treatment with women, children, the home, and farming. The violence inherent in Viking society is covered just as much as the curiosity which led them to sail across both the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The text is laid out in a series of short paragraphs which are usually associated with specific images. This allows the reader to skim for information at their own pace, rather than follow a proscribed narrative. The illustrations are a stunning mixture of drawings and photographs, produced in such high resolution that the objects and people seem ready to slide off the page. The last eight pages provide glossaries, fast facts, and additional resources.

My six year old picked this up at the library, and I was surprised by the choice but I learned a lot.
