Thomas Recchio's Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford: A Publishing History is a profound and detailed look into the history of the novel Cranford, in all its many forms. Novel, play, high school editions, compilation of illustrations and a very thorough and detailed bibliography all combine to give the reader a wonderful appreciation of the novel. Recchio's book is not meant for the casual reader. It is not a biography; it is, rather, the place to turn to if you want a thorough grounding and intimate understanding of both the book and its history. Candidly, at times I found the reading hard slogging. The analysis and arguments often lead to very long and detailed analysis that rendered the printed page a strong mass of print with few, if any paragraph breaks. That, however, is because I am not used to such scholarly study any more. Clearly, I've been away from university for too long. When reading the book I felt that Recchio had more than a scholarly connection to Gaskell. I felt that he thoroughly enjoyed his hunt and the evolution of his arguments. I started reading this book to supplement my recent reading of Gaskell. I finished the book wanting to read Gaskell's other novels. A book that makes you want to read more is a successful book. Recchio's book is very successful.
