Examines the influence of Darwin and evolution on a number of books and their authors, including HG Wells, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and AS Byatt. The point about the interpenetration of order and chaos was perhaps made a bit too often, but this was a fascinating and enlightening read about several of my most important influences as a writer -- Darwin, Wells, and Conrad. It's helped clarify where I need to take my writing.

Loved this book, very 'down home'.
