Review # 1 was written on 2016-10-31 00:00:00 Branimir Lackovic There are very few books out there that attempt to critically assess the efficacy of educational programming in prisons. This one, although published in 2000 and authored by a Canadian, remains relevant to the contradictory environment of American prisons where thrives the juxtaposition of a prison culture that aims to objectify while habilitative efforts simultaneously attempt to subjectify -- the mixed efforts of retribution and incapacitation butting heads with efforts to produce citizens habituated to social norms exercised through some sense of agency. This author works that middle ground well, calling for an educational program distinct from the carceral space and tied to an equally powerful institution of its own, a university. Successful education must be imparted to some degree subversively, if by subversive we mean humanely, with dignity, and with respect for the however ephemeral possibility of transformation.

Review # 2 was written on 2011-10-21 00:00:00 Mary Schwartz I read the 11th edition actually. It was for a college class. Pretty good book.
