An excellent 'good press' account of one of my historical heroes, a far better king than the scant bit we were taught in school would imply, based on a completely misunderstood incident involving the sea's waves.

What I learned from this book was Knutr never sat on his throne on a beach, commanding the waves to go back. The source material for this period of history is thin on the ground. Danish as well as English history is certainly murky at the turn of 10th/11th century. In 1016, the battle of Ashingdon, between Cnut and Edmund Ironside paved the way for a period of peace and prosperity. It was a further 50 years before another serious invasion by a 'Northman', by Harald Hardrada (hard ruler) in 1066. Amazing when you think that Vikinga had been making serious trouble more or less continually since the 7th century. More incredible is Cnut's expansion after 1016. He attained king status back in Denmark, Sweden and half of Norway, which made him an emperor. Swa Swa Knutr micel cuninge.
