Review # 1 was written on 2012-06-15 00:00:00 Juan Castillo That I paid just 1 euro and 50 cent for this book is only marginal consolation for the battery of errors to which my poor mind was subjected. A pretty price to pay for a headache. Robert Grey has the loosest comprehension of history. Kaiser Wilhelm II, he tells us, joked about the 'Merry Wives of Meclkenburg-Strelitz' when George V changed his dynasty's name to Windsor. That would be an amusing anecdote if it didn't betray the author's sloppiness. Prince Albert's descendants were the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Similarly, he writes of the Duke of Teck's elevation to 'royal' status--something that, to the duke's great chagrin, never happened. Queen Victoria elevated him from serene highness to highness. That's it. If all that weren't enough, Mr Grey doesn't even condescend to give any sources, not even a scanty bibliography. Mr Grey's literary reputation rests on his being poet. I shall close on this: that license can only get you so far. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-01-12 00:00:00 Barbara Poelker This reviewer regrets that the three star rating falls only because of the selection of one of the five consorts covered. Actually, the solution would have been to cover more than five and then Catherine of Braganza would have been a very worthy addition. It was a bit of a surprise that Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was not included. Overall, an engaging, interesting work. |
