This is definitely a must-have book for the resident of Winchester and/or Hampshire, or employee in /habitual visitor to Winchester; the book tucked under the arm & taken on any number of walks around the city. On a dry day it really is rather fun (and free!) to try and work out where the photographer was standing – though a warning is necessary that since major town planning works in the 1970s to convert this medieval city into something approaching car-friendly, mean that an identification can sometimes prove something of a pleasing cerebral challenge. It’s startling to realise just how very many of the shops on the High Street and elsewhere, within the limits of the city walls, have been replaced by shops of another name and a different trade; sometimes several times over. Insights into social history are also abundant, just one striking example being illustr.#180, of the famous ‘Gun Riot’ in 1908 (the gun being a Russian cannon from the Crimean War – more information at the City Museum in The Square). The author’s notes accompanying each of the illustrations (almost all photographs) are sufficiently fulsome to delight any long-term once-resident of the city, now living away. So that solves the perennial birthday / Christmas present problem.

Excellent documentary history; the majority of its documents are taken directly from archives, rather than published sources, and so would not otherwise by easily available to most who wish to review cases other than Salem (which is much more thoroughly researched than any other seventeenth-century New England witch case). But reader, beware: in the 1999 edition-- at least in my copy -- pages 187-219 have been inserted in reverse order, and upside down. Very, very strange. Could it be . . . demonic ??
