I read this last year and was reminded of it when pondering the current issues on Goodreads, so I thought a review would be appropriate. Joyce analyses Strategic Management Theory and applies it to the public sector. It's a competent analysis and pretty much does what it says on the tin. I manage a team of social workers and others who work with some of the most vulnerable members of society. They're a feisty bunch and I think if I applied the GR style of management to them there would be hell to pay. GR clearly felt they had a problem with certain types of reviews and shelving related to some authors. There was also pressure from the Stop the GR Bullies group and the influence of the new paymasters Amazon. It seems that a something must be done decision was made somewhere along the line. I suspect what happened next was that someone looked at a few change management theories; Lewin and Mintzberg would have been trotted out. Maybe if they're more up to date some processual/contextual theories. Egan may also may come into play (GR has stakeholders now; they had before, the membership; but Amazon constitutes a proper stakeholder). They have identified the changes they wanted and where they wanted to get to. A bit of force field analysis and identifying of blockages will have been done. A plan would then have been put into place to get to the desired point. I think that this is pretty much what happened. Unfortunately the plan has gone awry because they made the basic mistake who no one who has really studied change management should make; they forgot the human factor. There will have been some discussion about the odd recalcitrant member who could be easily dealt with as per basic change management theory. The bit they forgot was to try to win people over to the change before starting it, they thought this would happen as people would just go along with it. This is where Strategic Management Theory comes in; it assumes that with large and complex organisations the usual rules do not apply and a different management approach is required. To Amazon GR may not seem to be a large organisation, but numerically it is and it is a comlex place. Strategic management requires a more complex and comprehensive analysis of the situation with weighing of different points of view and a more collaborative approach. The desired outcome may even be the same, if you can persuade people to go along with you. This wasn't done and the approach was pretty much classic Mcgregor's Theory X style; fear ond coercion. Back to the social workers I manage. Use the fear and coercion method of management and change and it blows up in your face. This, I think, is what has happened. There now appears to be little strategic direction and a lot of blind panic. To start deleting their most prolific reviewers would be a disater for them in terms of PR; you can't run this type of site with the majority who wander through and look at things; Amazon already has a site like this (it's called Amazon) There is a good quote from Joyce's book which sums up the current situation; "Crisis occurs when an organisation actually or seemingly loses control of its operations and the consequences of that action appears or actually does have dire consequences" That's Joyce quoting directly from Heath's work on Strategic Issues Management. I think this is where they are now. I have no idea what they will do next because it is clear that whatever plan they had has gone out of the window and no one at GR has yet shown any signs of having a clear grasp of what is going on. They might at least start with this book; there are a few handy charts at the back they could play with. This has been written in a sleepy haze after a good lunch and therefore may be complete cobblers; you have been warned; I probably should have warned you at the beginning!
