Basic Information That Everyone Should Know Although the information in this book is vitally important, it comes off sterile. I suppose that this book inadvertently illustrates the vast disconnect between network professional and human resources. Anyone in the networking side of the computer industry has a working knowledge of and is probably certified in Security Plus. This entails the nuts and bolts of security within an organization. I've seen stuff like this come down the pike before, and unless there are constant reminders and reliable threats, people soon slide back into carelessness. In other words: Basic Information That Everyone Should Know, but Probably Won't Use. HR on the other hand is about controlling the human assets within that structure; control that mostly boils down to baby-sitting. Clear down to telling your people that they should not talk text (on a company device) while driving. Not because it is clearly stupid and more dangerous than driving drunk, but that the idiot's family will probably sue the company for giving them that phone. The policies outlined in the book are meant for HR to use as a policy structure around handling problems that will arise and lead to litigation. Since stupidity and the universe are endless (and Einstein wasn't sure about the universe) HR finds themselves constantly building new fences that bored and foolish employees find ways around. Or, CEO's, doctors, lawyers, and just about anyone who owns a computer. The biggest threat to data security isn't the Russian hacker; it's the ID-10-T giving them full access to their system. VPNs are essential to upper level pros that must be on call night and day. Using a sledge hammer to pound the importance of professional behavior at home would not be enough for some people in some cases. Chapters on Cell Phone Cameras and other recording devices are often disregarded until it's too late. Someone gets fired and everyone else tut-tuts for a week or so before going back to FaceBook and telling the world with photos of that person's empty desk or big behind getting walked out. To prevent some of this, anything with a USB connection is instantly detected and disabled in most good companies, with that person called before the HR tribunal or shown the door. It's a never ending cycle and the naughty ones in HR needs to step up to the plate. Personal email is another huge problem. This one is perhaps the biggest point of contention between NP and HR since one successful SpearFishing attempt can bring down major parts of a network. HR often thinks that the magic fairy dust called Anti-Virus will make all their troubles go away. Not so. And on and on. I seriously recommend that NP and HR study this manual TOGETHER and discuss common points of concern. The threats out there are very real and the temptation to expose a secure company asset to attack is often coated in porn, promises, and pay.

I really enjoyed this book; almost every chapter is filled with great lessons about the best ways we can relate with others. I found much of the information to be basic common sense; and yet beneficial to achieving effective human relations in the workplace, at home or in our personal lives. 4 Stars !
