Review # 1 was written on 2018-05-16 00:00:00 Jeff Pare it's such an interesting and important topic - the patronage of philosophy (mostly in the 18th century), that is, the material conditions of the production of philosophical works (author doesn't use this language) - but I didn't like the approach. it seems as if he too literally holds on to all of Rousseau's statements (and of other mentioned philosophers) without more detailed analysis... too much comparison, enumeration of data & just historical linking without deeper questions, about division of labour for example... |
Review # 2 was written on 2007-07-22 00:00:00 Saad Haithm This book was originally written for the CBC's Massey Lectures. The book was really hard to follow, I can't imagine what the lectures must have been like. There was very little to hold the different chapters together, and inside the chapters there a wild changes of direction. I wasn't really able to figure out what O'Brien's main point was - perhaps that was part of his argument. |
