I really would like to give this book a 2.5. It wasn't *horrible* but it wasn't even "meh" to warrant 3 stars. This book starts off as if it might be pretty interesting. The first few chapters made me want to keep reading. But then you begin to meet the characters. There is not one likeable character in this book. There are a couple of tolerable ones but there is zero character development until the last sum-up chapters that there is no one you are really rooting for. This is interesting because at one point in the middle of the book, the main character is reading Madame Bovary and remarks that there is not one sympathetic character in that. I still haven't figured out if the author did this on purpose or if it was just a coincidence that one of her characters states something that is true about her very own book. Nothing really happens in this book, either. About two thirds of the way through, the plot just get ridiculously crazy, and not in a good way. All these people show up, some big secret is revealed and then resolved within maybe 20 pages. All of this just seems to me that it is trying too hard. Quite a few times, I also thought that this book seemed as if it was written way before it really was (2004?). Some of the statesments and attitudes just seemed very dated. It is generally a quick read, but then you run into sentences that trip over themselves. The authors will periodically throw in a word that no one would ever use in regular conversation or ever. In addition, the editing was not the greatest and there were quite a few typos and problems with tense and verb agreement.

This book started out ok. The first two or so chapters made it seem like it was going to be fun! But then it turns out that there is not one likable character in this book. This was interesting because about halfway through the book, the main character is critiquing Madame Bovary and says that not one person in that book is sympathetic. I still haven't decided if the author did this on purpose or not, or if she really thought her characters were good. Additionally, not much happens in this book. There are way too many characters who just pop out of nowhere and then, with about 5 chapters left, the plot just gets more and more ridiculous and then is, of course, resolved in about three pages. The whole thing left me irritated. Read: April 2, 2011
