On the 75th Anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy it is appropriate to award Five Stars to this amazing book and the man and woman at its centre. Jacques Trolley de Prevaux was a decorated, illustrious French naval officer. He married Lotka Leitner, a Polish beauty who was once a model for Madeleine Vionnet, the queen of bias cut fashions. Following de Prevaux's retirement from the navy, he and Lotka became agents in the French Resistance in the south of France. This area was liberated by the Allies on August 15 1944. The following day, the commander of the French who were part of the attacks, General de Lattre de Tassigny stated: "I want to stress here that the accuracy, importance and intelligence of the information provided to Allied Command by the Resistance of this region was one of the determining factors in the success of our landing......Who will ever be able to do justice to the sterling qualities of these men (and women) who, with calm, smiling heroism and at thei risk of their lives, moved about among the enemy installations and transmitted their information, either by the clandestine radios the Gestapo were so aassiduously tracking down, or, eluding the vigilance of German launches, by taking it out to sea, to a submarine from Africa?" There is every reason to conclude that the intelligence provided by the Resistance in northern France was equally successful at providing intelligence that ensured the success of the DDay landings. Jacques and Lotka de Prevaz were arrested on March 29,1944, most likely as a result of treachey by one of the members of their group Four days after the Allied invasion of Provence, on August 19, 1944, Jacques and Lotka de Prevaz were executed at the airfield at Bron, ten kilometers from Lyon. They left their 9-month-old daughter Aude. She hardly knew her illustrious parents. This gripping book is her testament to them. Highly recommended.

Recently, I decided to reread some of the novels that have been on my bookshelves for decades. Among these were several by Christopher Bram. The term 'epic' is often overused, but with a personal perspective from the life of Foreign Service agent Jim Goodall, with chapter variations from the POV of his niece Meg, the entire arc of the Marcos regime in Manila, and parts of Vietnam, are seen through the perspective of an American whose idealism for democracy erodes. With numerous up-close encounters with the Manila dictator and his infamous wife Imelda, this story charts the shifting corruption of U.S. influence in southeast Asian politics from the 1950s to the early '80s. Goodall's closeted life is gradually cracked open through a unique array of encounters and affairs, but love remains a foreign entity for him. His once earnest values are questioned, particularly through the eyes of his niece and Goodall's affair with her duplicitous boyfriend. The strange and secretive world of Washington D.C. politics and global events become uniquely personal and effecting.
