Loved it! It was a bit slow when talking about presidential history, especially if you already know the facts, but I felt it was very important knowledge for any person to know if they want to keep the country, and their view of America, United. More people should read this!

I had hoped by the end of the book I would have learned 2 to 10 simple, unique, but rememberable ideas for the next President of the US to follow - or at least for one to use to judge the new President by. Didn't happen. Instead, Abshire (in his 70's, West Point, Ph.D. History, played role in many presidencies, now heading a think tank involved with studying the Presidency) writes what we all know: US is at a crucial point and needs good, bold, new, thoughtful "leadership". Leadership is partially explained through a good section assessing how former US Presidents performed at tough junctures when they were in charge. He vaguely lays out a path for the next President to follow consisting of such complicated, broad, obtuse steps as: "strategy", "trust", "leadership", "courage", "curb arrogance", and "talented team". If those are what the takeaways should be - the forest I had been seeking - I got lost in the author's stories underlying them. When I finished I felt I had just read several Sunday NY Times articles. Interesting, academic writing, but somewhat forgetable.
