Lee was right in the thick of things during the days leading up to and after the American Revolution...but he has all but been forgotten.

This is an interesting book about a little known general in the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Lincoln was as committed as any revolutionary to the cause. He was grievously wounded at Saratoga, and later had the thankless job of defending Charleston, South Carolina. He got little if any support from the governments of the southern states. Eventually he had to surrender Charleston to the British. He would be at Yorktown for the surrender of Cornwallis. Yet other patriots are far better known that he, through no fault of his own.The author does a fine job of telling the story of Lincoln's life, so there must be quite a bit of source material about him He is just not well known to the casual history buff. Two things against Lincoln: After the war he was sent on two diplomatic missions both of which ended without an understanding or treaty with the Indians. The last part of his life he was the collector of the port of Boston. Hardly the stuff of high drama. So you have a man here who was no less committed to the cause than Washington. Battle scarred as any soldier and as fervent a Federalist as any in Washington's or Adams' terms as president. Yet he lived live "Under the radar". Definitely not in the first ranks of the Founders's generation. If you like Revolutionary War history I'd recommend it. The book is not a narrative history ala McCullough or William Manchester ( my favorite history authors).A bit dry in parts but very informative.
