This was my textbook for Minority Issues in Aging (Fall 2010) in my gerontology MA program. Katz invites authors to write essays on a wide range of minorities (ethnic, racial, religio and sex/gender). Their essays provide stats from the 1980 and 1990 census about population increases among these various minorities as they move into the demographic category "older adult" (65+). Each section provides information on challenges to older adults from each minority group. For example, many older adults prefer assistance in their own language and culture, including foods from their home culture. However, this is highly unlikely for most. And even those facilities that provide cultural-specific assistance have very long waiting lists. As with many social services, assistance for older adults is largely underfunded. As the boomers age into their advanced years, the US will need to develop programs and policies to support them. The boomers have been great advocates for their own needs, so to expect to hear more in the mainstrea media about the needs of older adults. I suggest this for anyone serving older adults, especially those in nursing, social work or program administration.
