I had wanted to read this since I was twelve and finally got my hands on one! Although it wasn't all I had hoped for, I did find interest in learning more about my favorite breed, and was very fond of the narrative of how the book Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (by Gail MacMillan & Alison Strang) came about to be written. It was fun to hear a book I had poured over as a girl described and discussed. Still, if your interest is to learn more about the breed I would recommend the above mentioned book far more.

I have a down side up side perspective on this book. I found the writing style a bit Oprah tabloidy, meaning no diminution of the authors awful childhood and resulting emotional damage. On the upside, the book made me understand (as a non horse owner, rider) how a relationship with a horse is on a whole different level from one with a dog, cat, etc. The horse in this book did not give the author any quarter, yet gave her mutual love and respect. The first well adjusted relationship the author had ever had. Animals are healers, this book really illustrates that.
