Review # 1 was written on 2021-03-17 00:00:00 Ronald Parker 3,5⭐ Ho deciso di leggere questo saggio di approfondimento per la parte orale di un esame di Storia Medievale che devo dare. Da una parte devo dire che il libro si legge molto bene, non è complicato da capire e ha un ritmo incalzante. Il problema per me è stato il secondo capitolo, perché inonda il lettore di una marea di esempi (decisamente troppi) che lo portano a perdere il filo svariate volte e di conseguenza anche l'interesse per quello che sta leggendo. Le parti che ho apprezzato di più sono state l'introduzione, che fornisce un quadro generale sulla posizione degli storici in merito alla storia legata al quotidiano e il momento in cui c'è una svolta, proprio grazie alla presenza di figure femminile nei panni dello storico. Oltre all'introduzione ho apprezzato molto il primo capitolo che va ad analizzare nello specifico i momenti salienti che hanno portato allo sviluppo dei due modelli di matrimonio e i perché dei loro conflitti e delle loro contraddizioni.

In fact, if one was to read any later publications on the topic, Duby's name would likely be mentioned plenty of times. Later historians' arguments on marriage are often based around their agreement, or often disagreement, with Duby's suggestion that lay and ecclesiastical models were in conflict. Overall, the examples he provides of the marriages of the early Capetian kings are fitting evidence for his thesis. It is a worthy read when it comes to comprehending the changing nature of marriage during the high middle ages. However, I would suggest that it is read alongside other historians, such as Christopher Brooke and David D'Avray for a more thorough understanding.
