Riddled with errors, on all matters, even some unrelated to chess. p. 231 - "It was then decided to play the last two games anyway" - this is perhaps the most idiotic error in the book. After game 22, Petrosian hit 12 points and thus retained the title, but there was no winner to the match yet because he hadn't reached 12.5 as required. This didn't happen until the draw in game 24. It wasn't "then decided" to play on; match rules required them to play on. p. 100 - "Capablanca back in his best form" - At the time of the second Alekhine-Bogoljubov WC match, Capa had actually played absolutely no competitive chess (0 games!) in over two years (since the December 1931 match with Euwe) and shortly after the match he would come in fourth at Hastings 1934/5, the second worst result of his entire career. Hardly "his best form." Errors like these two give the strong impression that Horowitz was just slapping words together without much thought to what he was actually writing. p. 85 & p. 99 - "the October 1918 revolution" - I didn’t think there was a single moderately educated American who was unaware that the Russian revolution occurred in 1917 p.70 - "On August 14, 1914, the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated" - the correct date is June 28. Errors like these two just make Horowitz look foolish. But, wait, there's more... p. 247 - refers to 1971 being Taimanov's first appearance as a world championship candidate; Taimanov participated in the Zurich 1953 Candidates Tournament p. 240 - The final score of the Spassky-Korchnoi candidates match is incorrect; the correct score is 6.5-3.5 p. 240 again - the Spassky-Korchnoi match took place in Kiev, not Moscow as stated p. 212 - Tal's score at Curacao was 7, not 8 p. 134 - "Keres lost his fourth straight game to Botvinnik" - impossible, since their overall score was +1 -3 =1. p. 114 - "fourteenth game that Euwe was able to score another victory" - it was the 13th game, Euwe lost the 14th game p. 109 - “In 1971 Euwe was elected FIDE president” - 1970 is the correct year p. 100 - “tied for first with Capablanca in Moscow 1935” - he tied for 1st with Flohr in Moscow 1935 (Capa was 4th), he tied for 1st with Capa in Moscow 1936 p.84 - "Capablanca's lifetime score against Alekhine - 8 wins, 7 draws, no losses" - at the time of the match Capa had only 5 wins against Alekhine p. 69 - refers to Lasker's last-round win against Capablanca in St Petersburg 1914 - the win was in round 7, and there were three more rounds after Lasker's win. p. 68 - "In 1900 when, at the age of 12, [Capablanca] won the championship of Cuba by winning a match against Juan Corzo." - it was 1901, Capa was 13, and the match was an informal club match not for the championship (at the time the Cuban champion was determined in a tournament) p. 47 - "after a reign of nine years" - Steinitz's reign was 8 years This is not all of the errors. There are many many more. These are just the ones I was able to find quickly in going back through the book.

Fair warning is given, unless you are really into warships this is one dry read. For the guys like me, this is a treasure. Extreme amounts of engineering detail are to be found here. Also, this is one expense book.
