But as a complete outsider to Ireland, I found it difficult to keep up with the multitude of characters and references of the book. I started reading the Cambridge Social History of Modern Ireland at the same time. Though the book is quite long compared to this one, it took its time to examine history in smaller and more manageable chunks. Better for some one with little knowledge of Ireland compared to RF Foster
