Review # 1 was written on 2021-03-15 00:00:00 Jeremiah Pactrick Close to 3,000 poems are credited to Edward Estlin Cummins. I’ve long favored his poems with their unique structures, akin to printed sculptures, perhaps influenced by Apollinaire and the Dadaists, and/or jazz. He constantly experimented with words and wordplay, often dismissing familiar grammatical usage such as capital letters, using unusual spacing, fusing words together (thus speeding up reading and/or speech). Or, spacing them wide apart (suggesting long pauses in thought or speech). Over a 45-year period, he created a wide range of typographic arrangements with words, sentences and paragraphs that became intriguing visual and mental exercises. This biography is a most welcome insight into the life and work of a remarkable poet. See also: “e.e.Cummings: Poems, 1923-1954.” |
