Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-22 00:00:00 Bran Roth Fun, page-turning history of French satire in multiple formats -- newspaper caricature, theater, street demonstrations, and academe. The battle between satirists and censors was at times absurd and very entertaining. Forbes shows how satire developed political awareness and became a powerful political tool. Gave me new perspective on The Daily Show and what power satire might have today. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-09-11 00:00:00 Shane Herring A quick and thorough introduction This is a thorough and quick introduction to the French Revolution and is a good springboard to other more in depth books that expect a basic knowledge of the events and major players. The author somehow manages to portray the many nuanced opinions of the revolution, its intentions and implications in relatively few pages. In the last several pages prior to the appendix he provides details on many of the prominent and more in depth books that have been written about the subject. |
