My expectations for this book probably didn't match the author's goals. The premise (to track the use of the term "civil society" and its "conjoined twin" fanaticism through western history) is fascinating, but I was in error to expect a more philosophical or psychological exploration of "fanaticism" than it offers. Certainly, the book does offer a substantial survey of how the idea of civil society has changed through history -- Aristotle, Augustine, Luther, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, and right through to Communist Russia and modern religious fanaticism. However, I can't say the author has brought any overarching ideas about this progression, and (again) it is clearly explained that the book is a textual survey. I did appreciate reading about Luther, and the doctrine of the two swords... and I admit that, here at the end of 2020, this made me hope that the incoming US administration does not hesitate to employ its sword (political power) against the outgoing, rather than take the view that this sword is subservient to some misplaced ethics of "unifying the country."
