Twelve women tell their stories about growing up in Madison during different decades of the 20th century. It's an especially interesting read if you've spent time in downtown Madison, as you'll recognize street names and landmarks that are mentioned. I had a lot of fun seeing history unfold through the eyes of these women. They tell of how their lives were affected by the war and economic difficulties that pervaded the nation, but also how normal days were like with school, friends, and celebrations. This book also includes some great historic photos!

A nice little collection of oral histories of Madison in the early-mid 20th century. I enjoyed reading all of the women's stories and learned some great things about the city! I would have liked to see a little more racial diversity in the selection of stories, but I suppose the editor might have been hampered by the volunteers she received. I also wish each chapter was a little longer, or that more women might have been involved--I'd happily have read a collection twice this length. :)
