A first person account of the Peshtigo Fire which devastated North East Wisconsin and had more loss of life than the Great Chicago fire that happened at the same time. The Father tried saving and sending as many as he could convince to the river. Over 5 hours spent in icy cold October northern Wisconsin river, helped save his life but suffered maladies after. He saved the relics from the church and ministered to those he could afterwards. Because of the Chicago fire, the governor and aid were sent there. Thanks to the intervening efforts of the governor's 23-year old wife she garnered financial support and enough goods to send two rail cars to the area. It is written in and "older" language not used to our ears so a careful read through this account shows the emotional and physical loss and yet resiliency.

Living near Paradise CA... The parallels between the Peshtigo Fire in 1871 and the Camp Fire in & around Paradise in 2018 are hard to miss. The word-images of evacuees caught by fire are evocative, though I'm grateful to be able to say that in 2018 more of us escaped than otherwise. If the Peshtigo paradigm truly was the start of modern firefighting in the wildland/town interface, I'm inspired to read more about it.
