Review # 2 was written on 2017-11-05 00:00:00 Jacques Quinn Not a deep book, and some of the pictures suggested deep stories that were not told, but it was a hoot. Lots of pictures of the parks-that-were. My husband used to be a docent at Point Defiance Zoo, which these days is awesome and does its best to build humane and interesting habitats. The zoo-that-was was more of the concrete slabs and cages variety. That said, in the pictures, the animals look happy enough; the circa 1900 polar bears seem very interested in the visitors reaching through the bars and had at least a bit of a pond. It was a little bittersweet to see pictures of the Point Defiance pagoda, where I have attended weddings and memorials, in its heyday. I know the powers that be are attempting to restore it to its former glories, but the fire took its toll. There are some great shots of the young men with the Civilian Conservation Core in their bunkhouses. Nice reminder that these parks were part of the larger history of the country. Not worth the cover price of $20 for me, but definitely worth checking out from the library.
