Review # 1 was written on 2017-08-27 00:00:00 Chris Snowdon Haunting, elegaic photos of the aftermath of logging operations in the Pacific Northwest and remains of once great forests. Included is an essay by Tess Gallagher appropriately enough as her husband Ray Carver grew up in these former mill towns that Johnson captured with these photos. The B&W photos in "Carver Country: The World of Raymond Carver" by Gallagher and Bob Adelman makes a nice complement to this work. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-06-19 00:00:00 John Holmes Through Eirik Johnson's lens I saw familiar scenes in a different light. I grew up in these same wet woods and never knew my family lived in poverty until I moved away. Now, years later, these photographs gave me a sense of loneliness and desolation I had not felt since my travels in third world countries. It did not surprise me, then, when I learned that Eirik had lived in Peru. My only consolation is my genuine optimistic belief that Nature will have the last say. |
