Review # 1 was written on 2011-01-09 00:00:00 David Derrick An interesting little book in that it covers the minor league baseball team called the Kane County Cougars from its start in the early 1990s through the 2004 season. The book starts off with a history of city baseball teams in the area from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. After a few pages of this old-time history (which was not related to the Cougars), there are a few pages describing the birth of the team. The bulk of the book steps through the first dozen or so seasons with short descriptions of a handful of games each year. It seems these were more or less random - some described games had something interesting happen, but many really did not. And the descriptions were quite short - mostly what could be gathered from a box score. What was done better, in my opinion, were the photo sections. The author included dozens of photos of Cougars players, as well as bobbleheads, ticket stubs and stadium pictures. The pictures all had some detail about the players involved, including highlights of their records at Kane County and where they want afterwards (and sometimes where they came from). Many pictures were candid shots instead of the action shots you usually see. In quite a few photos, the player is shown in subsequent team uniforms instead of his Kane County kit. The photo section tells a story, since many players never made it to the big league (though one quits baseball and becomes an NFL player!). The book ends with a listing of all Cougars players to make the majors. I found the writing uninspired, but the pictures make this worth looking through for those interested in the history of the team.
