Review # 1 was written on 2019-02-28 00:00:00 Marissa Euell Beautiful and historic look at one of Florida's most famous cities! I call Fort Myers: "The Hidden Hamlet". Having to cross the Caloosahatchee River to get there and located in Southwest Florida, one of the last frontiers in the United States, this city was meant to be explored. Starting out as a military outpost in the 1830s, Fort Myers from the very beginning was a strategic setting for the development of an area once unknown to the world. The town got it's first boost by Thomas Edison's unexpected visit to the area and he was so enamored by Fort Myers, he decided to build his estate there, then known as Seminole Lodge. After his visit, many northerners started to travel to this relatively unknown part of the country for recreational and business purposes. Fort Myers was officially settled! The images in this book perfectly capture the essence of what this city was and now has become. I consider Fort Myers one of the most historic cities in Florida along with St. Augustine, Tampa and Key West. I visited the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in 2018 and it was a sight to behold, chock full of history and vintage memorabilia. I recommend this book for you history buffs out there. This book will shine a light to Fort Myers's treasures!

Review # 2 was written on 2012-05-31 00:00:00 Joshua Fontaine A wonderful pictorial history of Lakewood/Steilacoom. I especially appreciate that the authors have a couple of call-outs for donations: if you know history of the area, contact so-and-so, or if you have photos, contact such-and-such. As someone who collects that type of stuff for two historical groups, I enjoyed how they worked in those asks.
