This History Maker Bios book on Abraham Lincoln is a great introduction to easy chapter books. This book details the humble beginnings of the Lincoln family in their one room cabin through his assassination while United States President. Lincoln's story should be inspirational to people with all backgrounds. He demonstrated that no matter what you level of education is or background, if you keep pursuing your dream - it can be achieved! Lincoln grew up in poverty and had limited access to school. This did not deter him from being an avid reader and seeking out education (all types) throughout his life. He experienced tragedy early on losing his mother and being part of a blended family. He connected with all types of people and felt compelled to do something about slavery in the United States. His compulsion for emancipation and urgency for enslaved people corrected the trajectory of a dark path in United States history. This book has actual photos of Lincoln, his friends and family and well as caricatures and vignets pertaining to his life, experiences and fun facts. I especially appreciate the timeline included in the back of the book as a snapshot and further reference recommendations, websites and a snippet about the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC should one desire to delve deeper into Lincoln's life. I feel this book would be for the lower elementary readers through 3rd grade. It appears that most of the necessary facts and quotes from Lincoln are included and would make an ideal resource for a report on his life. It was a quick read and chock full of simple to digest facts.

Abraham Lincoln was born into a poor family that lived in one room log cabins that his father, Thomas Lincoln, built himself. As a kid Lincoln and his family moved a bit because his father did not want to live where slavery was allowed. Abraham Lincoln held many jobs once he turned 18 and eventually moved to New Salem, Illinois where he owned a convenience store. While living in New Salem Lincoln often thought about ways to make Illinois better and decided to run for a position in state legislature. When Lincoln finally got elected he decided to become a lawyer to be a better lawmaker for his state. Lincoln got elected to the House of Representatives in 1846 and ran for state Senate but did not win. In the next presidential election Lincoln was elected as the candidate from the Republican party. Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery so when he was elected President many Southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. During Lincoln’s time at the White House he worked tirelessly to abolish slavery, eventually passing the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Lincoln was assassinated shortly after the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment by a Southern man who disagreed with Lincoln on slavery.
