Review # 1 was written on 2011-08-06 00:00:00 Penny Smith I just finished up my 6th year of coaching 8th grade varsity volleyball. I've always wanted to convey the importance of pushing yourself and continually learning - and I push myself as well. So, I picked up this book at the beginning of the season. I've been reading through it during the entire season. Occasionally I'd skip to a drill that focused on something we needed to work on. The book was aimed at the age level I coach, but there wasn't a whole lot in it that I didn't already know and practice. I could have used a little more depth on defensive systems and transition points in rotations... On a side note, we did just win the conference championship over the weekend. It's my 3rd tournament championship in 6 seasons. Beep beep. (That's my horn. I'm a-honkin'.) What I got out of this book: 1. There are two types of mistakes - learning and performance. Determining which type of mistake it is will be vital in correcting it. 2. Keep it fun. Don't drill so much. Just play the game. 3. Don't make running a punishment. If you have to punish, come up with another way. (I have the kids sit the bench during practice.)

Review # 2 was written on 2010-03-24 00:00:00 Laura Lorena Torel This is the book I received while going through the ASEP training. It covers the usual coaching matters in the first half (which is helpful). The basics on volleyball skills is quite good and covers the serve-pass-set-hit breakdown well. Each skill is followed by two or three mini-games to practice it. I thought these might be too advanced for 4th and 5th graders as I read through, but when I looked at the sample practice plans for a season (nice guideline), I began to think these can really be useful.
