Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-17 00:00:00 John Quadrino Wilmut and Grafton compiled an exceedingly worthy look at the work of The Goons (i.e. Spike Milligan, Harry Seacombe, Peter Sellers and others), which for a pre-internet resource was very important. The notes enclosed in the more recent Goon Show Compendium audio compilations are more fulsome when looking at specific episodes and series, however their nature precludes a general critical appraisal, plus form only a small part of an entirely different product for the aficionado. 'The Goon Show Companion' is better as a general introduction with some critical review aspects and of course a more clearly formed historical narrative. A must for any fan of the Goons and highly recommended for anyone interested in British comedy or entertainment since WWII. |
