I found this 1973 book in a thrift store. It's a collection of essays by conservatives on how to fix education. The brilliant ideas include making education more expensive so that only those with a market incentive go to school, getting the government completely out of education, going back to the medieval model of education (literally), letting schools be more authoritarian, etc, etc. Of course they were all scandalized by the students of their era speaking out against racism and war. A firm hand was needed. One author even said no one has yet to give a good reason for public education. Um. The almost redeeming essay was by Russell Kirk, the dying breed (oh, he's dead), an intellectual conservative and the only author to see a benefit to public education. His essay was decent except for the fact that he used his fine education and intellect to argue against intellectualism, basically saying we need to teach dogma and tradition. Blah. Ideological libertarian conservatives may enjoy this, but it was bad. I'll leave you with a couple of direct quotes to prove it. "We are not interested in the purely emotional, unreasoning convert to our point of view." "What the Negro is on the point of achieving is still denied to both women and Roman Catholics."

It's testament to Philip Ball's readability that I got through this book without skipping bits too badly. But there's a lot of (for a non-musician) technical detail here, and really you need to reading the book at a piano, or I suppose listening to an audio version with musical examples, to properly understand it. I do all my reading on the tube, where pianos are frowned upon.
