In his second installment of alphametics Steven Kahan once again hits the sweet spot. An alphametic is an arithmetic problem where the digits of the numbers are replaced by letters. The best problems are those where the words of the problem form a catchy phrase or they express another result. For example, EIGHTEEN + EIGHTEEN + THREE + THREE + NINE = FIFTYONE is an alphametic where the words also form a correct sum. Such problems are called ideal doubly-true (i.d.t.) alphametics. Sometimes, additional restrictions are necessary to guarantee a unique solution. For example, although not needed above, an additional restriction might be that EIGHTEEN is even. These problems, many of which were first published in Journal of Recreational Mathematics, are some of the better ones you will find. As longtime editor of the alphametics column of JRM, Kahan is in a unique position to choose the best from those the readers contribute. To sweeten the mix, several interesting number facts are also included. Complete solutions to all the problems appear at the end, although you really shouldn't peek. Alphametics are some of my favorite simple math problems. If you like basic mathematics puzzles, then I am sure that you will enjoy these. This review appears on Amazon.

I really like it because it gives clear intuition to the concepts. Great book for an introduction although the formal mathematics definitions are not maintained.
