A classic for fans (which my Mum was back in the day). This book lived at our family holiday house and I read it every year along with my cousin's old Mad magazines. Classic! When the house was sold, Mum rescued the book and here we are. Several jokes do not stand the test of time - some for their very British or outdated celebrity references (I haven't heard of several of the celebrities mentioned, but I can't really hold that against it as I am far too young for M & W!), some for their questionable content that wouldn't fly today (Dressing up as a native American anyone? Predatory behaviour for laughs? No?). Definitely a book of its time, it is in many ways a relic, but it is also a fascinating look into the comedy of its day.

A brief examination of the trials and tribulations of life as it was lived by a rather privileged cleric at the turn of the nineteenth century. As most of the author's suffering seemed to take place during his visits to friends and acquaintances, the book left me feeling glad I wasn't around at the time to play host to him.
