Review # 1 was written on 2013-07-16 00:00:00 Melissa Kit "Images of African Americans as bad mothers, ineffective mothers, and matriarchs...conceal and justify the difficult conditions in which they work and raise children.... But oddly enough, these same women, who are said to run amok in their own communities, are thought to be entirely competent at parenting the children of the elite-as mammies during slavery, as domestic workers during segregation, or as child care workers today." ― Leith Mullings |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-06-19 00:00:00 Jeff Matayo I read this book over winter break in preparation for this winter quarter. It's a beautiful celebration of the African American Vernacular. It gives detailed information concerning its grammar, its origins, its history, and its forms (music, poetry, speech, and writings). It gets to the truth about ebonics and the need to preserve this beautiful America dialect. An uplifting read. |
